Marriage: One Man + One Woman = One Flesh!

“But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined to his wife), and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” (Mk 10:6-9)

Jesus’ words in today’s gospel make it clear that marriage is a sacrament in which a man and a woman are joined together permanently to make one flesh. If any of these elements are missing, then there is no marriage. He doesn’t say marriage can be between two men or two women. He also specifically states that it is permanent.

One man…one woman…forever. If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, they are wrong. If they disagree, tell them to take it up with Jesus!

the last sentence of "taking it up with Jesus" is gratuituously contemptuous and typifies an uncaring and unloving church. Out of roughly 1,000,000,000 catholics, many are in failed marriages, for reasons beyond their control etc even though the parties entered the sacrament in good faith, maybe they were unfit to take the marriage vow by reason of immaturity or otherwise. The church needs to show compassion and understanding, as none of us are as wise as Solomon, who also sinned. Here in Ireland etc the majority of young people are leaving the church, because of this contemptuous attitude, especially as some of our high profile bishops and priests have failed in their vows and have been guilty of child sexual abuse, having mistresses and children and misusing church money. No one can throw the stone, so Gary get off your high horse and take a long hard look in the mirror, before you denounce sinners and stop promulgating church law, like an Iranian Muslim Mullah or Komeni, as Jerus stated that we are all sinners and we have no authority to generally denounce other catholics, who are unable to stay married, for reasons outside their control.
