Mary And The Importance Of Motherhood

Tomorrow we celebrate Mothers Day, a good time to reflect on the sanctity of motherhood. Unfortunately, today?s society tells us that unless a woman has a job outside of the home, they aren?t living up to their full potential. That?s a really sad point of view because it diminishes the importance of motherhood, an extremely noble vocation.

I am blessed (as are my children) that my wife, Eileen, has always understood the importance of being a mother. She makes many sacrifices daily so that our girls are completely provided for and our household runs smoothly. I get to go the office everyday and work in a very structured environment, but Eileen has chosen to forego that convenience and make sure that things are stable at home. I am grateful for her selflessness and am blessed to have her as my wife.

Perhaps the greatest role model for mothers is Mary, Our Blessed Mother. She never pushed to become an apostle or pursue a role of prominence in her Son?s ministry. Instead, she always obeyed God?s will, even when it wasn?t easy. She knew that it?s ?not about her? and never attempted to steal the spotlight from Jesus. At the wedding at Cana she simply told the servers to ?do whatever He (Jesus) tells you? (Jn 2:5). As a reward for her constant obedience, she was assumed bodily into Heaven and reigns as the Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Let?s give thanks for all of our mothers this day and ask Our Blessed Mother to watch over and protect them.

Happy Mothers Day!
