The “Rich Young Man” In All Of Us

In today’s gospel reading, we hear the story of the rich young man who asked Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life (Mt 19:16-22). When Jesus instructed the man to “keep the commandments”, he replied “Which one?” When the Lord gave him a list, the young man responded that he does follow these commandments and asked Jesus if there’s anything else he must do. Jesus replied, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” It was at this point that the rich young man went away sad, unable to part with his possessions. Judging by his numerous questions, it seems obvious that this man truly wanted to understand the Lord’s teaching about eternal life…until it became too difficult.
I believe that there’s something in each of our lives that keeps us from following Christ more closely. It can be possessions, money, love of power, unwillingness to forgive, love of comfort, fear, or any number of things. You may not even know what that “thing” is. Why not turn to the Lord in prayer and ask Him, “What do I still lack?” Then, unlike the young man who went away sad, ask Jesus for the grace to help you eliminate that “thing” from your life.
