He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” (Mk 4:39-40)
How many times do we question events that take place in our lives? Sickness, death, unemployment, loneliness, betrayal…you name it and we have a problem with it. How can God do this to ME, how could I lose MY job, why doesn’t God answer MY prayers, things will never get better for ME… We often get so caught up in our own needs and problems, that we ignore Jesus’ instructions to “Be not afraid” (Jn 6:20). We forget that He is in charge of our lives and that He doesn’t make mistakes!The readings from today’s Mass (Heb 11:1-2,8-19/Mk 4:35-41) remind us what it means to have faith. It involves trusting God ALWAYS, even when it doesn’t make sense. The Bible is full of people who trusted God under very difficult circumstances: Abraham, Moses, Abel, Enoch, Noah, Mary, Joseph, the centurion who requested healing for his servant, etc. While it is almost impossible if we try to do it on our own, asking God to increase our faith will have tremendous results. Today, no matter how much turmoil is taking place in your life, ask the Lord to increase your faith and see what happens!
Jesus said to him, ” ‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.” Then the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!” (Mk 9:23-24)
